Your message is loud and clear: Don’t suppress the vote!
The response to our special Action Alert today on the so-called Voter ID bills has been phenomenal. We want to thank the many of you who have let us know that you already called, emailed, or faxed the members of the House Elections Committee to tell them to vote NO on HB 218 and HB 626, which would create more obstacles to voting and registering to vote.
Just a couple of hours after our alert went out, John and I met with staff members for Rep. Kirk England, considered to be the committee’s “swing vote” on this issue. They said they’d already received over 20 calls about (against) the bill this afternoon and were definitely taking notice. By late afternoon, we heard the number was up in the hundreds. That’s thanks not only to the great work of TCAN activists, but also to our friends at People for the American Way and AARP, who also spread the word today.
If you haven’t done so yet, there’s still time to contact the committee members, in whatever way is easiest for you, before tomorrow’s hearing, where the bills are scheduled for a vote. If you don’t have time to contact them all, then please just contact Rep. England (undecided) and the three marked as “Favoring” below.
And please let us know when you do, and what kind of response you get. We’ve already heard that some people are getting a stock email from Chairman Berman alleging widespread voter fraud (of a kind that would not be fixed by this legislation).
Thanks for standing up for our most fundamental right.
