Be well, Senator Gallegos
We heard Friday (May 18) morning that Senator Mario Gallegos had to return to Houston because of his health (he underwent a liver transplant earlier this year). His intention was to remain at the capitol until the end of the session and in fact he stayed in Austin much longer than he probably should have — to serve his term and (along with 10 other senators) stand against the voter roadblock bills.
Before leaving, he made his wishes explicitly known to the other senators and Lt. Gov. Dewhurst that he is opposed to putting HB 218 and HB 626 on the floor for a vote. If the Senate remains the respectful institution it has been, his wishes will be honored.
You may wish to call your own senator and express your views about senate protocol and respect for Senator Gallegos. And while you’re at it, contact Gallegos’ office and send him your best wishes and thanks. (You can look up any senator’s phone number or email right here.)
Keeping these bills from passing has always been the right thing to do for Texas. Now, honoring an ailing man’s wish is also the right thing to do for the legislative institution.
Update:
Senator Gallegos returns to Austin on Monday the 21st to ensure the vote suppression bills are blocked. Health permitting, he’ll remain until the session is over.
THAT’S True Courage.
