Texans Against Big Money

In April 2007, Texans Against Big Money, a broad coalition of public interest groups, led by the True Courage Action Network, Texans for Public Justice, and the League of Women Voters of Texas, was successful in persuading the Texas House Elections Committee to hold hearings on three bills that would have placed reasonable limits on campaign contributions and on last-minute sham “issue” ads. Although the committee chairman, Rep. Leo Berman (R-Tyler), ultimately killed all three bills by refusing to bring them up for a vote, the hearing itself was a minor victory. In addition to testifying at the hearing, members of the coalition held a successful press conference on the Capitol steps, published several letters to the editor in newspapers around the state, and collected more than 600 signatures on our petition to the Elections Committee.

Seventeen groups signed onto our Texans Against Big Money statement, and we expect to continue working together for meaningful reforms in future legislative sessions.
